JUNIOR WATER POLO - THE BASIC RULES
1. Each team has 7 players in the water at the one time. Six field players and a goal keeper. Substitutes remain out of the field of play behind the goal line
2. The goal keeper is the only player allowed to catch the ball with 2 hands and wears a red cap.
3. The game is played in 4 quarters. Each quarter starts with a swim off, with both teams lined up on their own goal lines and one or more swimmers sprinting to gain possession of the ball at the centre of the playing field when signaled by the referee. After a goal is scored, the non-scoring team recommences the game at the half way line. All players must be on their own side of the half way line. 4. The playing field has imaginary lines at 2 metres and 5 metres from the defending goal line, marked by plastic cones on the side of the pool.
5. An attacking player is off side if within 2 metres of the goal line unless the ball is between that attacker and the goal line.
6. If a foul is awarded to a player outside the 5 metre line, that player can have a direct shot at goal, provided the shot is taken without baulking. Otherwise, a free throw must be passed to another player before a shot can be made at goal.
7. A Corner Throw is awarded to the attacking team, to be taken on the 2 metre line, if the goal keeper deflects a shot at goal over the goal line or any defending player throws the ball over the defending team’s goal line.
8. A Goal Throw is taken by the goal keeper or any member of the defending team from the 2 metre line if the attacking team throws the ball out behind the goal line. There are 3 types of Fouls in water polo: Ordinary Fouls, Major (exclusion) Fouls and Penalty Fouls.
9. Ordinary Fouls are committed and a Free Throw is awarded to the other team if, a player does any of the following:
1. catch the ball with 2 hands
2. take the ball under the water
3. punch the ball – unless the goal keeper.
4. throw the ball out of the field of play
5. reach over an opponents shoulder who isn’t holding the ball.
6. take more than 3 seconds to take a Free Throw – a Free Throw can be taken by lifting the ball up and passing it to yourself.
7. to waste time in swimming to take a Free Throw - the nearest player musttake the throw 8. baulking when taking a Free Throw at goal from outside the 5 metre line.
10. A Major Foul is awarded and the offending defender is excluded from the game for 20 seconds or, in the event of a Major Foul by an attacker the ball is turned over to the defending team, a player commits an offence:
o by holding, sinking or pulling back an opponent who is not holding the ball (if a player is holding the ball, a defender can bump the ball or the player’s arm or sink the player holding the ball if trying to get to the ball)
o by swimming on the legs or back of an opponent who is swimming into attack.
o by interfering with the taking of a Free Throw (stay 1 metre back from the player taking the Free Throw).
o by flicking the ball away from an opponent who has been awarded a Free Throw.
o by diving into the field of play when substituting. Substitutions should be made by the exiting player swimming into the defending corner and the substitute then entering the field of play.
o by arguing with the referee or otherwise showing disrespect.
o by deliberately splashing an opponent in the face or creating a “curtain” of water.
o Any player committing 3 Major Fouls in a game is excluded for the remainder of the game but can be substituted by another player.
11. A Penalty Foul is committed and a Penalty Shot at goal awarded to the attacking team from the 5 metre line when a defender commits any of the following;
o to hold, sink or pull back an attacking player who would most probably have otherwise scored a goal
o for the goal keeper to take the ball under the water when challenged by an opposing player.
o or if any player kicks or strikes an opponent.
When a Penalty Shot is awarded, all of the defending players other than the goal keeper must retire behind the 5 metre line and stay at least 1 metre away from the player to take the shot. The Penalty Shot must be taken immediately the referee blows the whistle to signal the taking of the throw and must not baulk.
Quiet a lot of contact occurs during a water polo game. Unless the attacking player is holding the ball, an Ordinary Foul will be awarded to the opposing team. Violent contact or contact to the head or face will be penalized with a Major Foul.
